How it works
What security window film actually does
It holds broken glass together. A layered polyester film bonded to the inside face means that when the pane is struck, the glass cracks but stays in the frame as a sheet rather than collapsing into an opening someone can climb through.
That distinction matters, and it's where most of the marketing around this product goes wrong. Security film is not bulletproof and not unbreakable. A determined person with the right tool will get through it eventually. What it does is turn a two-second smash-and-reach into a sustained, loud, visible effort — and most opportunistic break-ins don't survive that.
The same property does a second job that has nothing to do with crime. When glass breaks accidentally — a ball, a storm, a trolley, someone walking into a full-height pane — film keeps the shards bonded rather than sending them across a room. That's why it turns up in schools, childcare centres and shopping centres as often as in security applications.
The honest answer
Is security window film worth it?
It depends entirely on what you're protecting against. Film is excellent against opportunistic entry and accidental breakage. It's the wrong product if you're expecting it to stop a determined, equipped intruder.
Worth fitting when
- Your glass is at street level, in a lane, or otherwise out of sight
- You've had a smash-and-grab, or a neighbour has
- Full-height or frameless glass that people could walk into
- Glass around door handles and locks, where reach-through entry happens
- Schools, childcare, healthcare — accidental breakage matters more than crime
- You want protection without bars, grilles or a change to the look
Not the right answer when
- You need a rated physical barrier — that's a security screen, not film
- The frames are old or poorly fixed; film is only as strong as what holds it
- The realistic threat is entry through a door rather than glass
- You're expecting it to be bulletproof, which no window film is
- Budget is better spent on locks, lighting or an alarm you don't have yet
We'd rather have that conversation at the quote than sell you film that doesn't address your actual risk. If a security screen is the better answer for your situation, we'll say so.
Specification
What thickness do you need?
Security film is specified by thickness, measured in mils — thousandths of an inch. Thicker film resists more, costs more, and is harder to fit around tight frames. Matching it to the actual risk is the whole job.

The part most quotes leave out: anchoring
Film applied only to the face of the glass has a weakness. Hit it hard enough and the whole filmed pane can be pushed out of the frame in one piece — intact, but no longer in the wall.
An anchoring or attachment system bonds the film's edges to the frame itself, so the glass, the film and the frame act as one assembly. It costs more and it is the difference between film that slows an intruder and film that merely tidies up the mess. On genuinely security-driven jobs, ask any installer whether their quote includes edge attachment — if they look blank, that tells you something.

Cost
What does security window film cost?
Quoted per square metre after a site assessment. It sits above solar film because the material is thicker and slower to fit, and anchoring adds to that again.

What moves the price
- Thickness. The single biggest factor. 4 mil and 15 mil are different products at different prices.
- Anchoring. Edge attachment is additional labour and material, and it's worth costing separately so you can see what it adds.
- Glass area and access. Ground floor is straightforward; upper-level and external work needs equipment.
- Combining functions. Some films do security and solar control together. If the room is also too hot, one product may serve both — ask at the quote.

The process
How installation runs
- Assessment
We look at the glass, the frames and the actual exposure, then recommend a thickness and whether anchoring is warranted.
- Written quote
Itemised by area and specification, with anchoring costed separately so you can see what it adds.
- Installation
Glass cleaned and prepared, film cut and applied, edges finished. Commercial work can run after hours.
- Curing
Thicker film takes longer to cure than solar film. Expect some haze for a few days — it clears as it dries.
Inside or outside the glass?
Security film goes on the inside face. That's the point — an intruder is striking from the outside, so the film needs to be on the far side of the glass from the impact, holding the fragments back. Film applied externally would simply be cut away.
Anti-graffiti film is the opposite case and goes on the outside, because it exists to be sacrificed. If you want both on the same pane, they're two separate layers on two separate faces.
Questions
Common questions
Does security film make glass unbreakable?
No, and be wary of anyone who says otherwise. The glass still breaks. The film holds the broken pieces together so the opening doesn't form, which is what slows or stops entry.
Will it change how my windows look?
Clear security film is optically clear and doesn't tint or darken the glass. If you also want heat and glare control, tinted security films are available that do both.
Can it go on any window?
Most flat glass, yes. Frames matter though — film is only as effective as what holds the glass, so old or poorly fixed frames limit what any film can achieve. We'll tell you at the assessment if that's your situation.
Does it work on double glazing?
It can, but it needs checking first. Applying film to some sealed units can affect the unit or its warranty, so the glass type has to be confirmed before quoting.
Is it better than a security screen?
Different products. A screen is a rated physical barrier and stops more, but it's visible and changes the look of the building. Film is invisible and preserves the view, and it also handles accidental breakage. Some properties warrant both.
How long does it last?
Interior-applied film on well-maintained glass has a long service life. Clean it with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, and keep ammonia-based cleaners away from it — ammonia breaks down film adhesive over time.
